2020 Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer has some big changes for the 2020 model year. It now rides on a rear-wheel drive platform, which not only increases its performance but adds space in the cabin. The Explorer lineup now has two more models, and the Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced safety features now comes standard. Here are some more details for the 2020 Ford Explorer.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The base XLT trim comes standard with a power liftgate, LED taillights, automatic headlights, a rear bumper step pad, and body-color door handles and liftgate spoiler. The Limited has dual chrome exhaust tips, 20-inch wheels, automatic windshield wipers, LED fog lights, and power side mirrors with heated glass and integrated LED turn signals. Choose the new ST for black roof rack side rails, a hands-free foot-activated liftgate, and LED taillights with blackout treatment. This performance model also has a sport-tuned suspension. If you step up to the Platinum trim, it comes with power fold side mirrors, satin chrome lower body side cladding insert, and aluminum roof rack side rails.
Engine (Power)
The base engine for the 2020 is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with 300 horsepower. A 365-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6 is under the hood of the Platinum. Both of the engines work with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and drivers have a choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
Performance
Either of the gas engines will provide quick acceleration and a smooth ride. Even the base four-cylinder engine has more power than most other entry-level SUV engines, and it is one of the most fuel-efficient powertrains in its class. Riders will appreciate the composed ride in the Explorer and its athletic feel. The new rear-wheel drive platform improves handling, and, when properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,600 pounds. This is more than the previous model and other three-row SUVs.
Interior
With the standard configuration, the Explorer can fit up to six passengers. Adding the optional second-row bench seat increases seating to seven. The cabin features lots of soft-touch materials and upscale features. Bumping up to the Limited gets you driver's seat memory functions, power-assisted folding second-row seats, and power-folding third-row seats. The Platinum comes with perforated leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and leather-wrapped interior trim. Even the base Explorer has technology features such as an 8-inch touch screen display, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and two USB ports. The Premium and ST offer the option for the Premium Technology Package with a 10.1-inch touch screen, and it also has a 14-inch B&O stereo system.
Safety Features
Co-Pilot360 comes standard in all 2020 Explorers. This group of driver aids includes a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, a pre-collision system with automatic braking, a pedestrian detection system, and lane departure warning with mitigation. The Explorer also comes with a post-collision system that applies the brakes after a collision.
Co-Pilot360 Assist + is an available option. This package comes with adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and an improved lane-keeping assist system with navigation.
